Beast Academy is a series of illustrated textbooks and workbooks from the math beasts at Art of Problem Solving. 
 
Absolutely recommend these books for building strong math foundations. The books are in 5 series, with each series having an A, B, C and D level. So, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D,2A , 2B ..... all the way till 5D. Except for the 1 series, each level has a guide book and a practice book. The guide book explains the concepts in cartoon fashion and the practice book has associated practice problems. 
 
My notes: The Beast Academy series is a challenging curriclum in graphic novel format. These are not your rote learn-how-todo-and-try-yourself type of books.  It goes all the way to pre-algebra, at which point one can move onto the AOPS curriculum.The students read the graphic novel and then do the problems (which are hard, teach critical thinking and frustration tolerance!). The problem book for 3C level and both guide and problem books for  5A, 5B, 5C and 5D are available in our library.
