First, we suggest relaxing a little on the idea of having your child read what you want. When you don’t push your agenda and let them read what they like, you are pursuing the long game, going for a love of reading rather than short term educational gains.
That said, a nudge in a particular direction is appropriate at times. You can gently introduce reading material that you like, and want them to read, but follow your child’s lead. This can look like reading one or two chapters of the book to your child and see if it catches on. Or looking at pictures on the topic or book and see if it sparks any curiosity.
You can also intentionally leave the books (especially if they have pictures) you like around in your house, in visible but casual places, like a side table, and see if your child opens them and engages with them organically. This is also a subtle way to introduce different topics or books and see what they gravitate to. You can leave out mystery books, or books on different countries, science fiction or birds for example and see what they like. Keep the selection fresh by changing it every few weeks. Who knows, even if they don't instantly take to it, they may pick up what you want on the second or third try?
